It’s Hilarious To Watch But Works Very Well
August 15, 2025Starfrit Rotato Express Electric PeelerThis thing is hilarious. I’ve never seen ribbed potatoes before. I peeled 10 potatoes a couple nights ago just to try it out. They are now….ribbed. It did an awesome job though. The skins are very narrow and one piece from end to end. I just put a garbage container on the floor in front of the counter and all the peels just dropped straight into it. I pulled out my handy dandy trusty hand peeler and compared my peeling speed to the machine. This peeler was done almost before I got started with the hand peeler. Is it perfect?? Nope. It skipped peeling a couple of small spots but only took about 5 or 10 seconds to touch them up. If the potatoes were perfectly round it probably wouldn’t have missed anything. Am I happy? Most definitely. If nothing else I’ll get a laugh out of watching it rib…I mean peel the taters. Is it sturdy??? Welllll, it isn’t aluminum. It’s all plastic except for the blades and the spiked holder at the bottom. Time will tell. Would I recommend it?? Most likely even if it’s just for the laughs. It really does a decent job as far as I’m concerned. You can even take it on the road with you, you know, for camping and such. If there isn’t any electricity handy you can put 4 AA batteries in it and you’re off to the races. Good purchase. I’m happy with it….so far but again time will tell. Just remember, if it’s perfect it isn’t man made.Update December 30, 2025I’ve gotten more use out of this peeler in the last week than I have since I bought it. Just remember to have a hand held peeler handy for those few spots it misses because potatoes aren’t perfectly round. It does miss the very odd spot.My only complaint is “how do you fully clean it?” The spikes at the bottom are very close together which make it somewhat difficult to clean. I’ve used a dish cloth, a sponge even a tooth brush. It’s still difficult to clean. You can’t run it under water. I’m quite sure water would get into the motor and burn it out. I’m not done trying yet though. I’ll find a way. Actually, while I was typing this I thought of something else. I have little brushes I use to clean my steel drinking straws so I went out and tried it. It worked perfect. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before.Overall Performance: This thing is a real time saver. I cook a lot of stews and soups in my crock pot / slow cooker. As such I use a lot of potatoes and carrots. This thing will peel both as well as a lot of other things. It used to take me a lot of time to do prep. This electric peeler saves me a lot of time. Now, instead of taking me a couple of hours it takes me less than an hour to prep. I’m not very fast at peeling vegetables and fruit and it was the thing I disliked most. Now, I don’t mind peeling.Lets face it, I bought this peeler as a novelty but it has become something I use a lot and I really enjoy using it. I would most definitely recommend this electric peeler. It can peel a lot of different fruits and vegetables and is a real time saver.Take care and Happy New Year.

Way better than I thought
I told myself that if I buy this I will soon have one more “good idea” at the time item, that after a few uses rest in a dusty drawer never to be used again.I have bought 2 different type of potato, apple peelers in the past and both were good for a few tries.One was a horizontal one where one had to hand turn a crank. However the potato kept falling off. I also bought a super one that was just around 200.00 where one can throw in 10 or more small potatoes and they would all be peeled within 1 or two minutes. The problem with that unit was that it took 15 minutes to clean up the foam, peelings and the mess as one had to use water. I happen to see a similar one for sale right now on Amazon. (No thanks)Now this guy works amazing. I peeled easily a long 10 inch English cucumber. Now I cut it first into 3 sections. Did a fantastic job. Later I peeled 10 small red potatoes and again a perfect job and really fast. I would say less than 10 seconds per potato.The potato sticks in well, and will not fall out. Yes, at the top and bottom there will be some peeling not touched. However one can easily remove it fast by hand or just even leave it on.It comes with 2 spare blades and one is already installed. One can also just put in 4 AA batteries and run it without the AC power in case of a power outage or any other reason.This gadget will not rot away in a dusty drawer as it will be too busy working. Also super easy to clean as like in 10 seconds at best.If you hate peeling, then this is the answer.

The first time I used it I couldn’t help but laugh. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do and actually speeds the job up. It doesn’t get everything but it’s easy to clean up the little bit it can’t do.

For the price, I think that this is a good deal. I’ve attached a video for you to get in a good idea of how this product works, very user-friendly. Seems to peel pretty good however it does leave some areas with skin on depending on the shape of the fruit or vegetable. Also keep in mind. The blade is extremely sharp so when removing or inserting it be very careful.

A no BS review
I bought this not because I’m lazy, but because since I had a stroke my dominant hand has trouble properly manipulating a sharp knife or peeler for irregular items like potatoes.This does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It does leave a “skin cap” at either end, and it will leave little patches of skin where there are eyes on the potato or other imperfections. Not a huge deal.For best results, get potatoes as large and symmetrical as possible, even if it means buying them from the loose bin. I find the ones they dump into the 5 lb or 10 lb bags tend to be the misshapen oddballs. You’ll have less waste and far more satisfaction with using the Rotato if you do this.Pet peeve: the spiky rotating base that holds the potato or other produce tends to collect a lot of dirt and wet grime. It’s difficult to get a cloth in there, and Starfrit says not to wash the base because of the electronics (go figure). So I found that if you run a thin stream of hot water from the faucet and carefully hold the device sideways, you can get the grime to rinse away without getting water inside the base. In all cases UNPLUG THE UNIT before doing this! I also unclip the blade for a proper rinse and just store it beside the unit and the power cord. There’s also a couple spares in the base.If you figure out the strengths and limitations of this product, you’ll be a far more satisfied customer.

I bought this “Rotato” for a friend because I love mine so much, my favorite of all my beloved Starfrit gadgets abd housewares. This is handy fir everyone but especially if disabled. It looks cool too.
